Missouri, and several other states, are currently combating an outbreak of Avian Influenza, which has caused the depopulation of at least 9 different commercial flock facilities in Missouri alone. More than 400,000 have been depopulated as a way to curb the rate of infection.
Because of preventative efforts, there is no threat of an infected food supply, but consumers are still urged to prepare meat safely, and for producers to monitor their flocks.
But while this states-wide event hasn’t negatively affected the food supply in the way of health concerns, it could lead to economic ones. Prices of eggs have already gone up due to inflation and supply chain issues everyone is already familiar with, but with Easter around the corner and Avian Influence causing higher demands and less products, consumers should expect the price of poultry products to increase further.
